SONATA 1

FROM THE PUBLISHER: “THE FALL” In this all-new series from DAVID HINE (THE BULLETPROOF COFFIN), BRIAN HABERLIN (WITCHBLADE), and GEIRROD VAN DYKE (SPAWN, MEDIEVAL SPAWN/WITCHBLADE), two cultures clash on a planet they each believe is their Promised Land. The Rans are a peace-loving people, but the Tayans are a race of warriors who seek to colonize and control. The mysterious Sleeping Giants also call this place home, though no one knows if they’re monsters or the gods of legend. And amidst all this, a young woman named Sonata is willing to break all the rules to find her place in this world—and she’s not about to let sleeping gods lie.

I am sure if you have read any of my previous reviews, you know I like a strong female lead.

Even better if she’s sassy.

Well, Sonata has the ability to be that. A young rebellious girl on a newly inhabited planet. An overprotective father who recently lost his wife and can't bear to lose his daughter. Add on to that, a bit of adventure and possible war with other inhabiters. Oh and a slurry of creatures that they have and have yet to encounter. This could get good in later books.

But we are only on book one so let’s get to the nitty gritty.

This book is ok. The character development is lacking and definitely something that has been done before. So when I see it happen in another book I want to see something that gives it some pizzazz. The story itself is semi predictable, aside from the ending. If you have ever read a story where it is a daughter and overprotective dad dynamic, you know that he will be trying to keep her out of the action even if she is capable of more. He will send her on a smaller, “safer” mission while he does the more dangerous one. She will get in trouble anyway, by either going when she shouldn’t or something will ha[ppen on her mission.

The art however is more than ok. The first few pages in space are breathtaking and magical. The different types of spacecraft that were created are wonderful. The creatures that live on the planet are interesting and I can’t wait to see what other ones look like.

I am going to give this first book in the series a GO! I am hoping that the next books add more to the story and give it something to keep me coming back.

Although I am a completist so I may just force myself through them even if they do not.

RATING: GO!
